About The Founder
An avid outdoorsman before his diving accident, Topher Downham found solace and healing on Colorado hiking trails after becoming a quadriplegic. After exploring many Boulder area trails in a wheelchair, he lead a community effort to help others with disabilities enjoy the trails as well. The product of this effort was the Boulder Area Accessible Trails and Sites Guidebook. Working for the City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks since 2001, he has been helping other people with disabilities reconnect with nature and the outdoors through wheelchair hiking and all-terrain handcycling. He has created state of the art accessible trail guidebooks, trail videos, adaptive programs, experiential programs, and trail management objectives for building adaptive mountain bike trails.
Wanting to help other agencies provide accessible outdoor experiences, he presents at conferences worldwide. He is a member of municipal, state, and local committees whose intentions are to create more inclusive and equitable outdoor opportunities. A firm believer that nature is needed by everyone, Topher has continually and unwaveringly advocated for opportunities for all.
His own insatiable need for adventure has been assuaged through adaptive mountain biking, handbike touring, camping, sailing, skiing and trying out a new outdoor sport every year.
